Idrissa Gana Gueye’s 70th minutes strike was enough for Senegal to book a semi final ticket in the ongoing 2019 African Cup of Nations at Egypt.
The two countries met at the June 30th Air Defense Stadium in Cairo on Wednesday evening to battle for a semi final slot.
After series of VAR drama which denied Sadio Mane to be on the score sheet, Everton Midfielder scored the only goal of the game to give the Teranga Lions victory over Benin. Gueye started the build up and fizzed a pass from midway to Mané near the opponent 18 yard box, then dashed forward for the return ball, which Mané provided. And Gueye crowned it with a sharp finish.
Before Gueye’s goal, Benin had defended very well to deny Senegal on countless occasions including Sadio Mane’s ball which went into the back of the net but was ruled offside. Saivet delivered another dangerous free kick. Koulibaly flicked it on and Mané finished with a close-range nod into the net, but that wasn’t the opener because Mane was offside.
After the goal, Mane should have added to his tally of three in the tournament. Sub Krepin Diata sent him through on goal, but his shot was well saved by the keeper. He had another chance after his goal was ruled out by VAR but again, he could not get a shot past the keeper.
Benin were reduced to 10 men with eight minutes left after Olivier Verdon was sent off following a late tackle on Gueye.
