Spicefmonline has learnt that government is yet to pay compensation to the stool of Essipong for the land on which the Sekondi Sports Stadium was built some 10 years ago in a bid to host the CAN 2008 tournament in Ghana.
According to Nana Kofi Abunah V, chief of Essipong, not even a dime has been paid to the Stool of Essipong for releasing the 96.7 acres of land to the government of Ghana for the construction of the 20,000 seater capacity Stadium in Essipong.
“…Normally when they take a land like this, they pay compensation to the stools, as at now that I’m talking to you, the money has not been paid, not even a dime has been paid to the stool of Essipong” she said.
She laments several letters and calls have been made to the office of the governments both past and present requesting for the compensation due to stool of Essipong has all not yielded any result but is hopeful the current administration will heed to their call and settle all outstanding debt pertaining to the land since his party through former president Kuffuor took the land for that national asset.
“It was during President Kuffuor’s time that the land was taken from us, but unfortunately, our president couldn’t retain his seat and a different Government came. So we wrote to the NDC government telling them the land which the Sekondi Stadium was built on for the CAN 2008 tournament has not been paid but I didn’t hear anything from them”.
A situation which Kofi Abunah V describes as a threat to her life and her authority as the traditional head of Essipong since a session of the public with his kings men thinks she has spent the money paid to her for holding the family land in trust.
“Though the stadium is at Essipong but it’s called Sekondi Sports Stadium, the land on which the Staduim sits is for Essipong Stool lands; you know in Ghana if something like that happens, you can’t say you are sending it to court. We wrote to the government but till today, non of our letters have been responded to so I stand on this medium and plead with Nana Akuffo Addo that now that NPP has come back, this money must be paid to avert any unforeseen circumstances from the community folk”, Nana Kofi Abunah V added.
In a bid to host the 26th Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Ghana, four stadia were rehabilitated whiles two new ones were constructed in Essipong and Temale.
The 20,000 capacity multipurpose Sekondi Sport Stadium was completed within the stipulated time of 20 months by Chinese firm, Shangai Construction Company.
Used mostly for football matches, it also serves as the home stadium of Sekondi Hasaacas FC.
